Over the past decade the Oxford Handbook series has become one of the most celebrated publishing programs at the Press. The series now spans 14 disciplines, and the titles published through it feature the world’s leading scholars and cutting-edge research.
In 2009 the series went digital with the release of Oxford Handbooks Online (OHO), which included four disciplines: business and management, philosophy, religion, and political science. A sophisticated platform for its time, OHO has been highly praised and it continues to be actively used by scholars, faculty, and students across the globe.
We have monitored site use since the initial launch and conducted several intensive research initiatives to assess the ways changing research habits were influencing how scholars, students, and our authors used the site. Our findings were compelling. First, we saw that online users are searching and browsing at the chapter level and not the book level. We also found unanimous demand for a reduction in the time between peer-review and publication. Last, we found users expect our digital program to be responsive to developments in the field.
I’m pleased to announce a bigger and better OHO redesigned to respond to the needs of the academy. The new OHO has a reengineered site design that better fits how researchers want to access the content, and we have reconceived the publishing process to include the appointment of Editors in Chief and Editorial Boards in every discipline in program.
As you flip through this digital brochure, you’ll learn all about how subscribers will benefit from a transformed site including more content, a more dynamic and faster publishing program, and an improved platform with state-of-the-art search, share, and discoverability tools, as well as information on the Editorial Board, free trials for your institution, and more.
If you are an existing subscriber, ensuring a smooth and pleasant migration over to the new OHO is a top priority for Oxford. We’re pleased to be able to offer you exclusive access to the Beta site and our Global Institutional Marketing Team has put together a step-by-step guide located at the back of this brochure to help guide you through the migration as well as a tool kit and several resources to support and help you promote OHO to your patrons.
We’re confident that you’ll be impressed with the new Oxford Handbooks Online, and I’m looking forward to your feedback.
Best Wishes,
Damon Zucca
The first Oxford Handbook was published more than a decade ago, since then the Oxford Handbook series has become one of the most prestigious and instantly recognizable handbook series across the globe. In 2009, Oxford launched Oxford Handbooks Online (OHO) and Handbooks from the esteemed Oxford Handbooks series were available online as a collection in four subject modules – Business & Management, Philosophy, Political Science, and Religion. The relaunch of OHO expands coverage to 14 subjects on a re-engineered platform with improvements to look-and-feel, navigation at the article level, and discoverability. The redesigned site and revolutionary changes to the publishing program include monthly updates introducing articles in advance of print publication and beyond the book born-digital content ensuring the most current, authoritative coverage anywhere.
Each Handbook offers a critical survey of the current state of scholarship in a particular field of study, creating an original conception of the field and setting the agenda for new research. Individual articles, signed by top scholars in their field, review the key issues and major debates, and provide an original argument for how those debates might evolve. In the culture of information overload these research reviews are more widely used than ever before.
To provide editorial guidance and ensure continued quality of our digital publishing, Oxford has appointed Editors in Chief and Editorial Boards to oversee each of the 14 disciplines in the program.
Scholarly review articles provide an in-depth overview of the field and provide authoritative guidance, directing students onto further related content
Peer-reviewed online-first and online-only scholarly review articles ensure that scholars’ output is informed by the most recent developments in the field
Delivers classic works of scholarship, together with newly-published works, across 14 subject areas making scholarship more accessible and discoverable than ever before enabling librarians to streamline their collections
A recently re-engineered platform and revolutionary changes to the publishing program means that, for the first time, all Oxford Handbooks will be published online as well as in print. Users will benefit from an all new user experience with search at the article level, a dynamic update program delivering articles in advance of print publication, and beyond the book, born-digital content.
14 disciplines from one of the world’s most prestigious series, including ten new disciplines digitized for the first time, provide scholars with easy access to even more scholarship via a single resource
Articles will publish online immediately upon passing through Oxford’s peer review process – delivering current, scholarly thought instantaneously, ensuring that scholars’ output is informed by the most recent developments in the field
An Editor in Chief and Editorial Board of subject experts will commission online-only articles expanding research in cutting edge topics, ensuring comprehensive coverage of fast-moving disciplines
New articles will be added monthly across subject areas, providing researchers with immediate access to new scholarship, increasing productivity and ensuring research is up-to-date and informed by current trends
A modern, intuitive interface, sophisticated functionality, and new user tools that respond to the evolving user needs in a rapidly-shifting online environment, provide a faster, more accurate research experience
Abstracts and keywords at the Handbook and article level, in combination with deep tagging and XML data, make it easier for users to find exactly the content they need, saving valuable research time
Researchers can build a personal archive of articles, searches, citations, and preferences which can be shared using a host of integrated social media tools
MARC21 records, OpenURL, full text DOIs, and connections to the Oxford Index* increase discoverability and seamlessly link users to their library’s catalog, building awareness and usage of library resources

Oxford Handbooks Online continues to bring to online research the innovation and quality assurance that are expected from Oxford University Press. Feedback from librarians and users inspired revolutionary changes to the program, ensuring that OHO remains a cutting-edge, essential tool for researchers at every level.
The Oxford Handbook Series brings together the world’s leading scholars to write articles that survey the current state of scholarship in their field. The articles review the key issues, reveal original arguments and concepts, and set the agenda for new research. In the culture of information overload, these review articles are more widely used than ever before.
Revolutionary changes to the site allow OUP to introduce these articles in advance of print publication, in addition to born-digital content, ensuring that users have access to the most current, authoritative coverage anywhere in a simple, highly-discoverable format.
Oxford Handbooks Online introduces 10 new disciplines in addition to four currently available through the site. Of these 14 subject areas, all of the Oxford Handbooks currently in print will be available online, bringing the total number of titles to approximately 300 and the number of available articles to nearly 10,000.

Along with this substantial increase in the size of the online program, Oxford has redesigned the site itself to make it easier for users to find the material they need and to ensure that all of the content featured is reliably up to date.
Monthly updates will introduce individual Handbook chapters prior to their release in print, online-only essays on emerging areas of research and updated versions of all articles whether they originally appeared within a Handbook or are only published online.
Oxford has appointed an Editor in Chief and an Editorial Board of leading scholars in each subject area to guide editorial development and ensure that scholarship meets the highest standards for academic quality.
This team of leading scholars will commission online-only peer reviewed articles expanding research in cutting edge topics and ensuring comprehensive coverage of fast-moving disciplines.
