Reviews of Oxford Reading Tree MagicPage
Magic Page has engaged all my Reception class children from the most able to those with limited literacy skills...
The Innovative Nature of the resource:
Magic Page has engaged all my Reception class children from the most able to those with limited literacy skills. Its Interactive Whiteboard format captivates the children's attention and there is a real sense of excitement and anticipation as they sit on the carpet. Magic Page caters for the auditory, visual and kinesthetic learner brilliantly. The software has not only supported my literacy teaching but impacted greatly on the children's competence in IT. The use of the video, recorded sound, teacher and navigation tools has given my class of 4 year olds a wealth of IT expertise whilst at the same time a genuine love of story like no other resource I've used. It is a joy to watch the children, retell stories about their favourite Oxford Reading Tree characters with such expression and enthusiasm, whilst confidently navigating through an electronic book to an audience. Magic Page has greatly improved the children's quality of story telling.
The impact on learning and work of the teacher in the classroom, to what extent and in which areas
This year the children engaged with the Oxford Reading Tree characters more readily as a result of using Magic Page. They have noticeably developed their story telling abilities and are able to transfer this skill when using the Picture only Oxford Reading Tree books. The children have also gained a vast knowledge about the use of character and sequence of events in a story. They have experienced through the talking book, that we read print from left to right and top to bottom. Magic Page clearly demonstrates the relationship between illustration and the written word. I have found that the children have successfully transferred their understanding about how a book works, where you start reading etc to other books that they read. Magic Page is a wonderful resource to teach reading and writing skills to the very young in a meaningful and purposeful context based on everyday familiar experiences and children's interests. It is teacher friendly, quick to prepare, follows a familiar format and supports cross curricular links, particularly with IT, Personal & Social Development and Knowledge & Understanding of the World.
How the resource supports or enhances the everyday life or work of the teachers, pupils or schools
Magic Page can be used for whole class and smaller teaching groups in the classroom and in the IT Suite. My children also access it in Continuous Curriculum Provision time as an independent chosen activity. They navigate through the talking books competently, using it to improve their reading and writing skills. Visitors to my class always comment on the children's confidence at using this software and enjoy listening to such young children talk about books using the visuals and audios as their stimulus.
Cost effectiveness in terms of educational aims and results, not just price
I have only been using Magic Page since Sept'07 but its impact on children's progress in literacy has been tremendous. Within 6 weeks of using this resource, I asked our Head to invest in Magic Page for other year groups as I could see the benefits would be far reaching. Magic Page was very well received by my Reception Parents when I demonstrated its wonders at a reading curriculum evening. In my view, Magic Page has been well worth the money and a resource that I would now not wish to be without.
...an innovative program in that it offers a clear structure for supporting the teaching of specific literacy objectives...
We have been using ‘Magic Page‘ in school for several months now and have found it to be an innovative program in that it offers a clear structure for supporting the teaching of specific literacy objectives but also allows the flexibility of using the material to meet the needs and level of your own class. It is innovative in that it is the first program we have used that allows the characters to interact with the children and share their thoughts or feelings. We have used hot seating in the classroom but never seen it done by a book character before and it can be used to model the sorts of answers we are looking for. It is also innovative in that there is always a cross curricular video linked to the story subject involving real children which the children can relate to – beyond the realm of Biff and Chip! The children love the class discussion involved in listening to and thinking up questions for the characters. It has proved particularly useful in developing a weak area in our school which is understanding beyond the literal and understanding why things have happened. We link the reading assessment focuses for reading and speaking and listening objectives in a wide range of shared discussion sessions which can last anything from a few spare minutes whilst drinking milk to an integral part of a literacy session. We have used the program in literacy, speaking and listening and circle time/SEAL sessions. We have also been working on the development of a daily phonics session and ‘Magic Page’ has been used in both the taught and apply sections of the session. Our initial aim was to use the programs in the whole class sessions but we have found that now that the children are familiar with how the stories work and how to access the different areas of each book they love to access them independently and listen to or participate in their favourite parts of the text. The use of the program has impacted on children’s learning in that it offers another approach to things we already have like big books. Many children are captivated by ICT and stay completely focused on the task when it is on the whiteboard. It has also cut down on teacher’s planning as the teacher’s manual is clearly set out and easy to use. Teacher’s can very quickly pick out the elements appropriate to that specific session. The element of the program where you can change the text in the story offers an extra level of support in the form of a writing frame which is excellent for those who need a little extra in independent session or is an excellent teaching tool which results in a printable copy where everyone can become an author in a very structured way. The ‘I can……’ section is very useful for recording progress and links particularly well to our work on assessment for learning and the development of personalised learning.
...an effective asset for group and whole class teaching.
Oxford Reading Tree Magic Page is designed for shared literacy work on the interactive whiteboard. It contains six stories with Assessment for Learning integrated throughout. It is a valuable tool for the teaching of reading, giving the practitioner the ‘big book’ experience on the interactive whiteboard: exploring, predicting, thinking about characters, reading, changing and editing the story. We met the author and illustrator, hot seat characters, investigated the meaning of words and used the appropriate phonics. You can annotate, save and print with the tools option. The CD-ROM covers Stages 1, 1+ and 2, bringing to life six books the children recognise and use in the classroom. It is an effective asset for group and whole class teaching. This is invaluable as the depth of material allows you to plan many opportunities to revisit each title, finding new activities for discussion and assessment, keeping the class engaged and focused.
